HRYFH Program Description

HRYFH Program Description

Herndon-Reston Youth Field Hockey (HRYFH) is a sports program organized under the Optimist Club of Herndon, Virginia. We are a recreational, developmental youth field hockey program run entirely by volunteers. The HRYFH management team are people in your community who share a commitment to giving back to their community and improving the lives of children in our community. Our program focuses on skill development, teamwork, and good sportsmanship.

Fall Season Teams

Fall is the primary season for field hockey in the United States.

We have two team practices a week beginning in mid-August at Herndon High School.

Games are held on Saturdays beginning in early September at Herndon High School and Nike Park. Games conclude by the end of October.

November 11v11 Competition

Grade 7-8 and 9-12 teams compete on Saturday afternoons in November at Herndon High School.

Spring Season Teams

Our spring league season typically begins after FCPS spring break and wraps before Memorial Day weekend.

We have one optional team practice a week on Monday evenings at Arrowbrook Centre Park Soccer Field in Herndon.

Games are held Saturday evenings at Herndon High School. During spring season, we will play other teams from the Northern Virginia Field Hockey Alliance.

Spring Season New Players Clinic

New to field hockey? Register for our new players clinic!

This clinic is a one-hour opportunity to check out a new sport with no commitment. We'll go over the basics and play a few fun games. If you have them, bring a mouth guard, water and shin guards (any you have from other sports will work just fine). We'll provide sticks and all other equipment.

Participant Eligibility - Fall and Spring Teams

All girls and boys in grades 3 thru 8 are eligible and potentially grades 9 thru 12; participants are grouped into divisions based on their grade (e.g., 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-12). There are no school or county boundaries.

The success of all players depends on significant parent participation – especially for our youngest athletes. Parent engagement in all aspects of our program is crucial for the cognitive, emotional, and physical development of all young athletes.

Coach and Team Assistant Eligibility

Coaching or assisting a team is a volunteer position. Head Coaches must be at least 19 years old. Assistant Coaches and Team Assistants must be at least 14 years old.

All adult volunteers must complete a background check and a youth abuse prevention online training course and exam before leading or assisting in any HRYFH activity.

Equipment Needed - Fall and Spring Teams

Participants must provide their own stick, mouth guard, shin guards, and athletic shoes.
